Robert's Time In Iraq | |
To My Family and Friends, Well another month has past and all is well. The temperatures have transitioned from a high of 120ºF to a high of 95ºF. The nights may get a low as 70ºF. I never thought 70ºF would feel like the middle of the winter.
We had two big sandstorms in the month of September, but the rest of the month was clear. The storms are like something out of Hollywood...I never really believed Mother Nature could create phenomena like these. I always thought they were born out of the minds of directors and special affects artist...but here they are right in front of me. And I understand I am yet to see some of the most magnificent of these storms. You can see images of the sandstorms by clicking here.
This month we held an Air Force Marathon here on base and I had the honor of handing out the awards to the runners...no I did not run it...running in 110ºF temps did not sound like fun...nor did the distance. I run my 3 miles at night when it is cooler about 3 to 4 times a week.

We had a change of command this month. The new commander seems like a good guy...a Navy Captain...and will be pleasure to work for. Also this month, many of the Marine and Army units on base have changed out...many heading home after being here a year or more. The new units arriving are here for their 1 year rotation and are full of energy. Our challenge is to channel that energy, of the young troops, for good and to keep them from mischief when they are bored. Thank God there were no casualties on Al Asad this month. Next month the US Marine headquarters for Iraq will be moving to Al Asad...I am sure many things will change when they arrive...which will make my job fun. Furthermore, most of the Navy personnel at the Base Command Group will be changing out next month. Most of the guys working for me are part of this group...therefore, I will have all new Sailors working for me. As always, thanks for your support and I will write more next month. God bless and take care, Robert
